A one-night stand

A one-night stand is a single "sexual activity without emotional commitment or future involvement" without expectation of further relations between sexual participants. This is regardless of whether a single encounter was originally intended by either participant to be a one-night stand, or whether further relations between the participants subsequently arises.

But I've learned that it is anything but normal, short of a French film, the oppressed majority has been making rounds on the Internet, highlighting role reversal in real life with all night chat rooms leading to sex-cams and Skype, online dating and one-night-stands... because all is not what it appears to be.

Human sexual activity, or human sexual practice or human sexual behavior, is the manner in which humans experience and express their sexuality. People engage in a variety of sexual acts from time to time, and for a wide variety of reasons. Sexual activity normally results in sexual arousal and physiological changes in the aroused person, some of which are pronounced while others are more subtle. Sexual activity may also include conduct and activities which are intended to arouse the sexual interest of another, such as strategies to find or attract partners (courtship and display behavior), and personal interactions between individuals, such as foreplay. Sexual activity may follow sexual arousal.

Human sexual activity has sociological, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and biological aspects; this includes personal bonding, shared emotions during sexual activity, and physiological processes such as the reproductive system, the sex drive and sexual intercourse and sexual behaviour in all its forms.

Hot and Heavy

That all being said, let us consider sexual activity as it can be classified in a number of ways. It can be divided into acts which involve one person, also called autoeroticism, such as masturbation, or two or more people such as vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex or mutual masturbation. If there are more than two participants in the sex act, it may be referred to as group sex. Autoerotic sexual activity can involve use of dildos, vibrators, anal beads, and other sex toys, though these devices can also be used with a partner who chooses to play the role of the human dildo.

Pamela Anderson Alley Scene dishes out "Raw Justice 2" Kiss-kiss, bang-bang !! in this terrible B-movie saved by the fact Ms Anderson does a couple of sex scenes, the first of which is quite erotic actually. A guy takes her into an alley at night and pins her against a wall before lifting up her tight top whereupon we discover Pam has gone braless this evening. He squeezes and gropes her juicy jugs before sucking her nipples as she arches her back in ecstasy before he heads further south, turning her around and pulling her denim mini-skirt down to kiss and paw her curvy bare ass. The camera films from the waist up when he gets his dick out and begins pumping in and out of her from behind, grabbing her breasts as he fucks the shit out of her. "Why don't we do it on the road?" - Beatles 1968

Sexual activity can be classified into the gender and sexual orientation of the participants, as well as by the relationship of the participants. For example, the relationships can be ones of marriage, intimate partners, casual sex partners or anonymous. Sexual activity can be regarded as conventional or as alternative, involving, for example, fetishism, paraphilia, or BDSM activities. Fetishism can take many forms ranging from the desire for certain body parts, for example large breasts, armpits or foot worship. The object of desire can often be shoes, boots, lingerie, clothing, leather or rubber items. Some non-conventional autoerotic practices can be dangerous. These include erotic asphyxiation and self-bondage. The potential for injury or even death that exists while engaging in the partnered versions of these fetishes (choking and bondage, respectively) becomes drastically increased in the autoerotic case due to the isolation and lack of assistance in the event of a problem.

Sexual activity can be consensual or take place under force or duress, or lawful/illegal or otherwise contrary to social norms or generally accepted sexual morals.

Frenzy of Exultations (1894), by Władysław Podkowiński

The health effects surrounding the human orgasm are diverse. There are many physiological responses during sexual activity, including a relaxed state created by prolactin, as well as changes in the central nervous system such as a temporary decrease in the metabolic activity of large parts of the cerebral cortex while there is no change or increased metabolic activity in the limbic ("bordering") areas of the brain. There is also a wide range of sexual dysfunctions, such as anorgasmia. These effects impact cultural views of orgasm, such as the beliefs that orgasm and the frequency/consistency of it are important or irrelevant for satisfaction in a sexual relationship, and theories about the biological and evolutionary functions of orgasm.

The physiological responses during sexual stimulation are fairly similar for both men and women and there are four phases:

• During the excitement phase, muscle tension and blood flow increase in and around the sexual organs, heart and respiration increase and blood pressure rises. Men and women experience a "sex flush" on the skin of the upper body and face. Typically, a woman's vagina becomes lubricated and her clitoris becomes swollen.

• During the plateau phase, heart rate and muscle tension increase further. A man's urinary bladder closes to prevent urine from mixing with semen. A woman's clitoris may withdraw slightly and there is more lubrication, outer swelling and muscles tighten and reduction of diameter.

• During the orgasm phase, breathing becomes extremely rapid and the pelvic muscles begin a series of rhythmic contractions. Both men and women experience quick cycles of muscle contraction of lower pelvic muscles and women often experience uterine and vaginal contractions; this experience can be described as intensely pleasurable, but roughly 15% of women never experience orgasm and half report having faked it. A large genetic component is associated with how often women experience orgasm.

• During the resolution phase, muscles relax, blood pressure drops, and the body returns to its resting state. Though generally reported that women do not experience a refractory period and thus can experience an additional orgasm, or multiple orgasms, soon after the first, some sources state that both men and women experience a refractory period because women may also experience a period after orgasm in which further sexual stimulation does not produce excitement. This period may last from minutes to days and is typically longer for men than women.

Sexual dysfunction is the inability to react emotionally or physically to sexual stimulation in a way projected of the average healthy person; it can affect different stages in the sexual response cycles, which are desire, excitement and orgasm. In the media, sexual dysfunction is often associated with men, but in actuality, it is more commonly observed in females (43 percent) than males (31 percent).

Sex is the Motivation

People engage in sexual activity for any of a multitude of possible reasons. Although the primary evolutionary purpose of sexual activity is reproduction, research on college students suggested that people have sex for four general reasons: physical attraction, as a means to an end, to increase emotional connection, and to alleviate insecurity, which is also called the “pity fuck”.

A one-night stand can occur for different reasons, which vary between people. Examples of one-night stand participants include young adults exploring their sexuality; single people seeking to engage in sexual activity without any sort of commitment or relationship; or married people who desire extramarital sex without disturbing their marriage or family relationships through extramarital romantic relations. A one-night stand may be pre-planned, in which at least one of the participants intended for the sexual encounter to be a one-night stand prior to participating.

It is noted that the circumstances which lead to such an encounter do not necessarily preclude a later relationship:

Certainly, having sex on a first date can be a death knell if your partner decides that a one-night stand is all he is after. On the other hand, many happy couples broke that rule of no sex on the first date and have been together for years.

However, where the people involved have regular sexual relations without romantic involvement, this is generally considered a casual sexual relationship, which is distinct from a one-night stand. Such a relationship may be called one with 'no strings attached'; the people involved may be called 'friends with benefits'.

Most people engage in sexual activity because of pleasure they derive from the arousal of their sexuality, especially if they can achieve orgasm. Sexual arousal can also be experienced from foreplay and flirting, and from fetish or BDSM activities, or other erotic activities. Most commonly, people engage in sexual activity because of the sexual desire generated by a person to whom they feel sexual attraction; but they may engage in sexual activity for the physical satisfaction they achieve in the absence of attraction for another, as in the case of casual or social sex. At times, a person may engage in a sexual activity solely for the sexual pleasure of their partner, such as because of an obligation they may have to the partner or because of love, sympathy or pity they may feel for the partner.

Charlotte Gainsborough…

The extended one night stand which is known as casual sex has been aptly termed the “Booty Call” by men. Whereas the extended partner of a “menage à trois” or group sex otherwise known as the “Orgy”.

Orgy - Khajuraho Lakshmana Temple (see Kama Sutra)

“Gang rape” or “rape”, where the woman is simply an object of male aggression, is the beastial mentality of men to overcome a woman sexually by physical force and victimize her by sodomy assault or repeated entry by various members while others hold her victim. The intent of the pleasure is mostly one-sided and male. These are also technically One-night-stands.

Also, a person may engage in sexual activity for purely monetary considerations, or to obtain some advantage from either the partner or the activity, such as sleeping with the boss for a job or a promotion. A man and woman may engage in sexual intercourse with the objective of conception. Some people engage in hate sex, which occurs between two people who strongly dislike or annoy each other. It is related to the idea that opposition between two people can heighten sexual tension, attraction and interest. This can swing both ways when it comes to gender. Other terms of endearment here are called “brown-nosing”, "kissing ass" or “blow-job” or “quickie”.

In the case of a reckless one-night-stand, there can be real life consequences for both parties:

Any sexual activity that involves the introduction of semen into a woman's vagina, such as during sexual intercourse, or even contact of semen with her vulva, may result in an unintended pregnancy. To reduce the risk of pregnancy, some people who engage in penile-vaginal sex may use contraception, such as birth control pills, a condom, diaphragms, spermicides, hormonal contraception or sterilization. The effectiveness of the various contraceptive methods in avoiding pregnancy varies considerably.

Married people who desire extramarital sex without disturbing their marriage or family relationships through extramarital romantic relations or those wanting open promiscuity in relationships, should do so with mutual consent, otherwise known to wreck marriages, close friendships and long-standing relationships.

Physical risks vary with the type of sexual activity being engaged in. Assault and violence are obvious, however, the medical condition and physical limitations of the participants should be kept in mind. The risk factors are increased by a condition (temporary or permanent) which impairs a person's judgment, such as excess alcohol or other drugs, or emotional states such as loneliness, depression or euphoria. Age and mental capacity of the participants can also affect the risks of sexual activity. Many people claim that the way they prefer to die would be being “fucked to death”.

There are songs of sex as therapy, such as Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” or Peaches’ “Fuck the Pain Away”.

Psychosexual development: Bronisław Malinowski and natives, Trobriand Islands (1918)

Psychic Sexual Orientation consists of gender identity (sel- f-estimation), gender role (objective estima- tion of the behavior) and psycho-sexual orien- tation (hetero-, bi- or homosexual). It was be- lieved that gender identification depends on the socio-environmental influences such as re- aring, learning and individual choice. In Freudian psychology, psychosexual development is a central element of the psychoanalytic sexual drive theory, that human beings, from birth, possess an instinctual libido (sexual energy) that develops in five stages. Each stage – the oral, the anal, the phallic, the latent, and the genital – is characterized by the erogenous zone that is the source of the libidinal drive, such as the almost near small death experience of "snuff sex".

There are many laws and social customs which prohibit, or in some way have an impact on sexual activities. These laws and customs vary from country to country, and have varied over time. They cover, for example, a prohibition to non-consensual sex and age restrictions, to sexual assault, to sex outside of marriage, to open sexual activity in public. So, unless you like the adrenaline, “Get a room..”

Sexual activity that involves contact with an unknown partner’s bodily fluids can at first be exhilarating and exciting, yet carries the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection. Sexually transmitted infections are bacterial, viral or parasitic infections that are spread mainly by sexual activity, especially vaginal or anal intercourse or oral-genital contact. People may not be able to detect that their sexual partner has an STI because people are often asymptomatic (show no symptoms). Think before you act recklessly, in the case where sexual need overrides common sense.

It has been shown that sexual activity plays a large part in the interaction of social species. Joan Roughgarden, in her book Diversity, Gender, and Sexuality in Nature and People, postulates that this applies equally to humans as it does to other social species. She explores the purpose of sexual activity and demonstrates that there are many functions facilitated by such activity including pair bonding, group bonding, dispute resolution and reproduction. Even if you don’t actually sleep with someone, you are still apt to “gender tease” in social interactions if you are at all sexually aware…

Or you might get off on "Sid and Nancy", a noir film of modern sexual times.

Some women have suggested that women who feel sexually insecure or unfulfilled should seek out one-night stands for personal growth and fulfillment. One writes, "[a] one-night stand is the erotic manifestation of carpe diem— only we are seizing the night instead of the day". Another source advises women seeking empowerment to "jumpstart your hayday by having a one-night stand", and clarifies that the one-night stand should be a conscious choice.

Sociosexual orientation (or sociosexuality) is the individual difference in the willingness to engage in sexual activity outside of a committed relationship. Individuals with a more restricted sociosexual orientation are less willing to engage in casual sex; they prefer greater love, commitment and emotional closeness before having sex with romantic partners. Individuals who have a more unrestricted sociosexual orientation are more willing to have casual sex and are more comfortable engaging in sex without love, commitment or closeness.

In some cultures, sexual activity is considered acceptable only within marriage, although premarital and extramarital sex are also common. Some sexual activities are illegal either universally or in some countries, and some are considered against the norms of a society. For example, sexual assault, as well as sexual activity with a person below some locally determined age of consent, are criminal offenses in most jurisdictions.
